Car and Van rental in Bilbao
Enterprise Rent-A-Car has a branch in Bilbao; take a look at the Enterprise Bilbao website here. Bilbao is the capital city of the Basque region of northern Spain, close to the Bay of Biscay. Historically, its fortune comes from being a busy port and producer of iron. The city became heavily industrialised during the 19th and early decades of the 20th century. Since the millennium, Bilbao has enjoyed much regeneration as the economy moves to be based around the provision of services. The Guggenheim Museum opened a branch in the city during the 1990s, which helped to further increase the growing number of visitors to the city, many to attend events and exhibitions at the new Euskalduna Conference Centre. Bilbao has an oceanic climate, with frequent periods of rain and cloudy days. The average summer temperature reaches the low 70 degrees Fahrenheit and in winter it seldom falls below the low 40s.

You won't find a better range of vehicles for hire than at Enterprise. Enterprise works hard to understand what makes their customers happy. Enterprise Rent-A-Car is recognised worldwide for great quality and service – it's not a here today, gone tomorrow outfit. The company wants customers to return time and again, so the focus is on providing a great deal at a competitive and affordable price. The Enterprise website is the best place to find what is available and to see any special offers. It makes sense to book your hire vehicle as far in advance of when you will need it as you can. This ensures you not only save money, but you will also have a greater choice.
Airport Car Hire
Travellers often complain about the time it takes from alighting from their flight to getting to their destination. Having a pre-booked hire car ready and waiting for you at the airport helps reduce this time significantly – no need to hang around waiting for public transport. Bilbao Airport is six miles north of the city centre and handles over five million customers a year. Over 20 airlines operate from the airport, flying to most European cities, although internal flights account for much of the volume of traffic, with the most popular destinations being Madrid and Barcelona. Enterprise has a branch at the airport.
Attractions in Bilbao
St James is the patron saint of Bilbao, so it is no surprise that the city's 14th century Basilica with its neo-Gothic tower is dedicated to him. Other churches of interest include Iglesias de San Anton, built in 1422 in a number of different architectural styles. A big attraction in the city is the Guggenheim Museum, with its remarkable exterior designed by Frank Gehry. Works of art and artefacts on display are usually loaned by other museums in the Guggenheim family. Visitors interested in the history of the Biscay area should find plenty to occupy their time in the Basque Museum.
Places to Visit Outside Bilbao
A drive of just under 10 miles from Bilbao will take you to Portugalete. Mid-August is a good time to visit, as this is when a four-day festival to San Roque takes place. The town has a small medieval centre in which is located the Basilica of Santa Maria. Cross the River Nervion on the car ferry and call in at Getxo, where you will find the 12th-century church of Andre Mari. The Aixerrota Windmill, built in the late 18th century, is in Getxo and is still producing flour, bags of which you can purchase. Adjacent to the windmill is a gallery of modern art and a cafeteria where you can sample Pintxos, the Basque equivalent of tapas.
Parking and Traffic Information in Bilbao
Bilbao is a busy city, so anyone planning to drive in the area needs very reliable satellite navigation or a good map. Nevertheless, most of the city is easily accessible by car, with the exception of the old part with its hilly streets and complex one-way system. The A-8 ring road serves the city and successful driving has much to do with leaving it at the most convenient exit for your intended destination, although any exit will take you into the city centre. Bilbao has both underground and street parking, although drivers are warned to watch out for resident-only zones. Many visitors choose to leave at exit 117 of the A-8 and leave their cars in the Termibus car park.
